Drifters set hearts racing with awesome display

Stephens says coming out to the mall was great and gave people the opportunity who don't go out to the racetrack a chance to experience what it is like.

Rock Raceway stars set hearts racing with their incredible display at the Springs Mall on Saturday afternoon.

The ā€œracetrackā€ was surrounded by motoring enthusiasts who were delighted at the opportunity to see their favourite stars up close.

Screeching tyres could be heard throughout the parking area, which was packed with spectators.

Some were forced to park alongside the N17 turn-off just to catch a glimpse of the action.

Mr Rock Raceway Tim Stephens gave a masterclass in drifting as he beat Larry Smith for the top position in the fifth round of the South African Quick Drifting Championships.

Stephens says coming out to the mall was great and gave people the opportunity who don’t go out to the racetrack a chance to experience what it is like.

ā€œIt’s been an awesome day and the crowd has been so good and loud; there’s going to be quite a few throat lozenges sold after this.

ā€œThe Rock Raceway has been so honoured to be here,ā€ says Stephens.

The stars of the day, however, were Joey Govender and Matthew Cooper who battled for the Silver Cup.

The duo needed four tie-breakers to determine the winner.

Racing fans were divided on who should be crowned the winner as each driver brought their A-game to the racetrack.

Judges were hard-pressed to find a fault in the drivers as they battled it out for dominance.

The winner was crowd-favourite Joey Govender who made the journey up from KwaZulu-Natal specifically for this event.

Fans were left screaming for more, and only the setting sun stopped the drivers from showing off all their best moves.

Next weekend will see RockMania taking place at the Rock Raceway in Brakpan, which will include drag racing, drifting and overall racing.
