Sewage floods Largo Road and SPCA

Jooste says she cannot use her shower or her sink as the sewage comes back up through the pipes and many on this road are experiencing a similar problem.

Sewage has been flooding Largo Road in Strubenvale since Monday and residents are frustrated by the lack of response from the metro.

The street is flooded and the sewage is seeping into nearby homes, causing health hazards and an unwelcome stench.

Bernice Jooste says that this problem has persisted for three years.

“The problem has gotten worse in the past three months.

“For the past three months, the sewage has been flooding the street every second week.

“And for the past three weeks it’s been happening every single day,” says Jooste.

According to Jooste, the Department of Water and Sanitation says that the nearest manhole is dysfunctional and they are unable to connect their pipes to it.

The other manhole cover is on a private property and they cannot connect to it without the owner being present.

“When the owner is here, he will give me the keys and I will open for them and they can use the cover, but if he’s not here, there’s nothing we can do.

“Last week the problem lasted six days,” says Jooste.

William Shaw’s whole backyard becomes flooded when this happens.

Jooste says she cannot use her shower or her sink as the sewage comes back up through the pipes and many on this road are experiencing a similar problem.

Corinne Shaw, William’s wife, says she is unable to use her washing machine.

“We just want answers from the metro, that’s all we want.

“We don’t want to go on living with this problem,” says Jooste.

Ward Clr Dean Stone says: “I phoned the acting chief area manager, Anton Dyssel, and he told me that there’s no money and told me I should speak to the HOD.”

Stone says that his attitude was shocking, and if that is how he responds to a councillor, how does he speak to residents?

Stone says he has contacted the city manager and is waiting for answers.

The SPCA is suffering from the same problem of sewage seeping through the ground.

The problem has persisted for two months and a large pool of sewage has collected outside one of the kennels for the last two weeks, causing a health risk to the dogs and the people.

“We have people who come and volunteer here on Saturdays and it’s very embarrassing with all this sewage.

“They have to walk through it and it smells terrible. We are afraid people might slip and fall.

“It’s not good at all,” says Clinton Uys, temporary manager at the SPCA.

Despite being given more than 48 hours, the metro have failed to respond to any of our enquiries.
