Striders take part in annual President’s run

For some of the athletes this was a very special occasion as they were preparing for the Comrades Marathon next weekend.

The temperature outside had plummeted to 2 degrees Celsius as the athletes from Striders Athletics Club gathered at Veritas College for their annual President’s run on Sunday morning.

For some of the athletes this was a very special occasion as they were preparing for the Comrades Marathon next weekend.

Tea, coffee, shots of Jägermeister and bacon and egg rolls were offered before the athletes took to the road to battle the extreme cold outside.

There was a great sense of excitement and expectation as the athletes prepared for their run.

Some engaged in a 10km run while others took part in a 5km run.

One of the standout athletes, David Venter, who will be taking part in his second Comrades Marathon, says: “I’m very excited for today.

“It’s a week before Comrades and this is where it all comes together.

“This is my second Comrades, so it’s nice to have the opportunity to speak to guys with more experience.”

He says it takes a lot of training to complete the Comrades.

“That’s really the only secret.

“The more you put in the easier it will be for you.

“You don’t want to find yourself out there having to dig too deep; you have to be as prepared as possible.”

Like many other athletes, Annie Arbuckle was running for a cause.

Arbuckle was running to raise funds for Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, for which the Striders have already raised R12 000.
