Local teacher goes for gold at karate competition

The event took place in Kuilsriver, Western Cape, and Mashiane was able to clinch a gold medal in the veteran division.

Teacher and karate enthusiast George Mashiane competed in the UWKF 13th African Karate and Martial Arts Open in Kuilsrivier, Western Cape, on April 27.

Mashiane teaches at Olympia Park School.

Mashiane was able to clinch a gold medal in the veteran division.

The intercontinental competition hosted martial artists from countries such as Zimbabwe and Namibia, but also allowed India to compete as an international country.

Mashiane says he feels proud of this achievement as he has put a lot of hard work into his training.

But moreover, he wishes to inspire children to take up karate.

“There are many benefits of karate, benefits for your memory, as you need to remember all those moves and, of course, physical benefits.

“Karate is also a very constructive activity and can keep children off the streets.

“It also teaches self-defence, which can be useful in a country with such a high crime rate,” says Mashiane.

Mashiane also wants people to change their view of karate from being a violent sport to one that teaches discipline and creates inner peace.

Mashiane wants to see karate elevated among schools and recognised more as a sport.
