New school promotes education for learners with special needs

The school caters for learners with special educative needs (LSEN) who have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities. It will help to address the skills shortage in our country.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s new school of specialisation was officially launched on April 18 in KwaThema by MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

Lesufi was accompanied by Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina and the education head of department (HOD) Edward Mosuwe.

“We are excited about our partnership with a number of stakeholders who will work with the school to ensure that learners of this school are known for their specialised skills when exiting our schooling system.

“This curriculum will bring opportunities to fully participate in learnership programmes as well, empowering our learners for future success despite their learning barriers,” says Lesufi.

KwaThema Skills School of Specialisation offers a technical occupational curriculum that includes practical and theoretical learning, thereby creating opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

The school caters for learners with special educative needs (LSEN) who have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities.

It will help to address the skills shortage in our country.

Mosuwe says the school will “enable learners to be sufficiently ready for the work environment or to start their own businesses so that they can also contribute to the economy of the country”.

Although LSEN school learners struggle with the academic demands of ordinary schools, they manage where the curriculum comprises both theory and practical experience.

Learners from this school will exit with a qualification on Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework, making them employable and equipping them with entrepreneurial skills.

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona says, “A graduate of the school of specialisation can look forward to multiple exit opportunities, including joining the labour market, entrepreneurship or furthering their studies.

“These schools will also assist in addressing skills shortages in Gauteng by creating skilled labour for the economy that will respond to the Transformation, Modernisation and Re-Industrialisation strategy of the Gauteng City Region.”
