KWV Springs humiliated by Hollywoodbets Swallows at home ahead of Gold Cup

Springs coach Ockert Brits said the team actually lost against itself due to unnecessary errors.

The match played on Saturday marked the sixth anniversary of the Gold Cup in which 16 eight-a-side rugby teams compete for glory.

The stands were packed and the KWV Springs spectators were shouting commands and voicing their frustration at the team while the Hollywoodbets Swallows spectators broke out in song.

The teams were evenly matched in defence, but the Swallows had the upper hand in pace.

Both teams suffered from several knock-ons and mistakes, forcing them to concede points.

The sole try for Springs came from Francois Prinsloo and their two penalties and one conversion were made by André Smit.

Springs suffered many handling errors, causing them to lose possession.

These errors occurred at crucial times when scoring opportunities were available.

Springs coach Ockert Brits says the team actually lost against itself due to unnecessary errors.

“The team had plenty of opportunities to score, but threw these chances away,” he says.

At half-time, the score was 17-13 in favour of the Swallows and remained unchanged until the end of the game.

As the final whistle was blown, the Swallows fans marched onto the field to celebrate with their team.

Wikus van der Berg was Springs’ standout player.
