Meeting fruitful between mining company and community

“We see communities as partners and whose concerns should be addressed on an ongoing basis,” says Ogur.

The Slovo Park residents and the management of Canyon Coal met last Tuesday evening regarding the protest action that took place the previous week regarding employment opportunities at the Ukufisa mining operations.

The management of the company said the meeting was fruitful and described it as successful.

“Members of the community also made suggestions to Canyon Coal’s management about how best they could apply for jobs and other opportunities in preparation for the full operations of the mine.

“There is an appreciation from both Canyon Coal and the community that issues of concern may arise from time to time.

“As a result, both parties have committed to continue with constructive discussions through appropriate community structures,” says Neslihan Er Ogur, the corporate communication manager.

The mine went on to say that both parties have a greater understanding of the employment opportunities that could be created with a mining operation.

“We want to ensure that people from the area where the mine is situated get preference for employment and business opportunities.

“ It is Canyon Coal’s policy to continuously engage with communities where we operate.

“We see communities as partners and whose concerns should be addressed on an ongoing basis,” says Ogur.
