Sewage nightmare nearly over for Pollak Park residents

Nortjie says the water has been bubbling up from underground for a while and it is not clear where it is coming from.

Pollak Park residents have been suffering from the unbearable stench of sewage that bubbles up to the surface every few weeks.

“The problem started with a burst pipe on December 18, which I reported, and the metro came to fix it the following day.

“Since then, there has been water that has filtered up to the surface,” says Ben Nortjie.

Nortjie says the water has been bubbling up from underground for a while and it is not clear where it is coming from.

“There is also a main sewerage line that runs next to the house and it blocks all toilets and flows across the street into the park and all over the road.

“As a result of the constant overflow of water, the only street light on the street has rusted and fallen over.

“It is completely dark now as we have no street lights remaining,” says Nortjie.

The only remaining street light fell over as a result of the water damage and the wires are lying exposed on the ground.

The wires from the street light that fell over are lying exposed and Nortjie is worried they might still be live.

Shadow councillor Lorna Beharie was dismayed by what she saw.

“Mr Nortjie cannot be expected to live under these conditions.

“The constant sewerage blockages cause sewage to seep into his yard and flow across his driveway.

“The stench is unbearable, he is constantly reporting the issue, the pipes are cleared and then it backs up again and the cycle begins again.

“This is not acceptable.

“We appeal to the municipality to sort this issue out once and for all by finding the problem with the infrastructure,” says Beharie.

Metro say they have fixed the sewage overflow problem in Daggafontein

A few days after The Addie visited the site, Nortjie informed us, the metro workers returned and tested the water in the hole and found it was not sewage.

They were going to put a camera in the sewerage line to see if it is broken further along.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
