New awards being planned for top learners in metro

Andile Nhlapo (22) will be organising the first Ekurhuleni Schools Awards in 2019.

The student teacher says he is creating the movement to encourage Ekurhuleni learners to put their best foot forward, all the time. “Whenever I see excelling learners nationally, there are seldom any from our city.

“I want to ensure that the schools have something of this magnitude to look forward to every year.”

Nhlapo adds that these awards are not only for learners. “We are going to appreciate teachers, administrative and general staff as well.”

The event planner admits that this is one of the biggest events that he has ever put together in his young career.

“Once I started planning, I realised the sheer amount of work that will have to go into this to make it a success.

“But I will not shy away from the challenge.

“The only unfortunate part is that we cannot accommodate every single school,” he adds.

Nhlapo says the participating schools will be informed as early as January next year.

“We will look at the matric results for this year and take the top secondary schools from that.

“Then a similar criterion will be used to select the primary schools.

“We are also including Saturday schools and holiday programmes.”

“We will do everything possible to make this a success for our schools.

“They deserve the best for their hard work.”
