EMPD by-law special operations mop up squatters in Springs and Brakpan CBD

On both days the metro police, together with traffic wardens, from 7am to midday removed numerous squatters and confiscated some of their belongings which were causing an unbearable stench as well as obstructing businesses entrances and pavements.

The EMPD over the past Saturday and Sunday had a special by-law enforcement operation where they removed illegal squatters from the Springs and Brakpan CBD.

On both days the metro police, together with the traffic wardens, from 7am to midday removed numerous squatters and confiscated some of their belongings which were causing an unbearable stench as well as obstructing businesses entrances and pavements.

This comes after the metro was inundated with complaints from residents and businesses about squatters who hole up indiscriminately at the front doors of businesses, on the pavements and in some instances within the premises of some of the business establishments.

The absence of ablution facilities and generally the littering taking place had the potential of causing untold health issues.

At some places the squatters had turned pavements and backyards of private businesses into recycling areas storing plastics and other collected materials.

“The EMPD will periodically pounce on the squatters to ensure that the CBDs of the Ekurhuleni towns are kept clean and that normal movement of pedestrians and operation of businesses are not unduly hampered,” says EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.
