 Bhairavi Sungum of Springs host 26th Multi-Cultural Sarasvathee Celebration Concert

“What you do for your children today will be your legacy tomorrow,” says Pillay.

The Bhairavi Sungum of Springs held their 26th Multi-Cultural Sarasvathee Celebration Concert at Springs Secondary School on Sunday afternoon.

Community members, as well as representatives from the various organisations such as Andrapradesh Association of South Africa, Benoni Tamil School Board, Springs Tamil Association, Springs Hindu Seva Samaj, gathered at the hall to celebrate and share in their Hindu diversity and praise Mother Sarasvathee, who represents knowledge, music and arts.

The concert began with a prayer and the lighting of the Universal Lamp.

The attendees’ spirits were not dampened by the cold and wet weather and they were entertained with dance items, sketches, songs, language items and guest speaker Indira Behari.

In her address, Poovershree Pillay, who is the very first female chairperson of the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs, says the community of Bakerton is still blessed for being able to continue the legacy of their peers in maintaining their heritage and customs even though it is no longer the large community they once knew.

Pillay further said it is rare to find a community like Bakerton anywhere in Gauteng, especially with their close interactions and sincere bond as organisations.

The chairperson also emphasised the important role parents play in their children taking pride in their heritage.

“You will not be disappointed as you see your children become the future leaders of our community.

“They will, in turn, talk about your sacrifice and motivation that took them there.

“What you do for your children today will be your legacy tomorrow,” says Pillay.
