Two years ago, a young girl was murdered while playing on the beach, a doll left by her side.

DI Bobby ‘Marilyn’ Simmons failed to catch her killer and he’s been tormented with guilt ever since.

So when another dead girl is found in the dunes, another doll, he knows this could be his only chance to silence his demons.

Psychologist Dr Jessie Flynn is called in to help with the investigation, but she’s being led into a web of lies and deceit by a new patient called Laura – a deeply disturbed woman who wants Jessie as her friend.

When links emerge between Laura and the two dead girls, Jessie’s worst nightmare becomes reality.

Book review: Munich

New to Medina’s work, I didn’t know what to expect and, after a slow start, rather enjoyed her work.

However, she is an acquired taste and an open mind is needed to get used to her writing style which seemed a little stilted.

Having acclimated to her writing style, I soon found myself being drawn in and eager to get to the end, and have all revealed, as quickly as possible. While I know who dunnit it about half way through, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel.

The plot is clever and well-paced with credible characters who draw you in and dare you to travel a series of twists and turns to find out if all your hunches are correct.

Medina turns what should be wholesome space – the beach – into a macabre murderous backdrop which may make you think twice about being on the beach alone.
