Safe haven for children

Parents have a safe alternative for their children.

Leonora Mgidi, from a small informal settlement in Daggafontein, dedicates her time to ensure that the children in the community are kept clean and safe.

Leonora has a small day care centre in the comfort of her home.

The house may not be big but to her, it is large enough to open up to over 20 children.

The parents in the community drop their children off in the mornings when they head to work or other commitments.

This helps the parents because they leave their children in safe hands and not with their older siblings at home, which is a reality in some circumstances.

Leonora gives the children food throughout the day and keeps them clean.

She also makes sure the environment is clean and disinfected to prevent the children from falling ill.

Leonora receives occasional assistance from Nqobile, a community member who helps her look after the children when there are too many of them on a particular day.

Nqobile also assists her in doing educational activities that help stimulate the children’s brains.

Leonora says she enjoys looking after the children and it brings her joy that their parents can trust her with their children.

The children seem to see Leonora as a mother or granny because of how they all want to cry in her arms.

A retail supermarket went to Leonora’s home on July 18 and donated food and cleaning supplies.

The representatives from the supermarket spent the day playing and interacting with the children.

While they were there they fed the children warm soup and had fruits and dessert for them.
