Spokesperson for the Springs police Capt Johannes Ramphora says the police received a complaint of house robbery and murder and went to investigate.
“Upon their arrival, they were taken to the woman’s bedroom where they found the elderly woman’s body next to the bed with her hands and feet tied up and a cloth pressed into her mouth,” he says.
Paramedics were called to the scene and declared the woman dead.

Ramphora says the house was ransacked.
“The problem we have is that someone must have opened the door for the suspects as there was no obvious point of entry where they could have come in,” he says.
The woman was discovered after her child, who phones her every day, phoned the woman on Monday morning but received no answer.
“The person then phoned the woman’s neighbour and asked them to go and have a look.”

After obtaining the keys to the woman’s house, they opened the door and discovered the woman’s body.
Ramphora says they suspect the woman was murdered by suffocation, but are awaiting postmortem results.
The number of suspects is not known.
A case of house robbery and murder was opened at the Springs Police Station.
