Vischkuil community comes to the aid of family after house burns down

Frans Lubbe (65) and his family's home burnt to the ground to a runaway fire.

“Someone tried to make a fire-break and because of the windy conditions that day, it ran out of control.

“It took 10 minutes to burn about a kilometre of land.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, nobody was home at the time, but I’ve lost everything,” says Lubbe, who lives with his wife and grandson.

The fire started on the afternoon of June 8, and the community of Vischkuil and local businesses rallied around the Lubbe family to ensure they would have shelter for the coming months.

Local companies donated containers, insulation ceilings and walls, food clothes and furniture.

Construction on the containers began on June 18, with unemployed members of the community donating their time and skills.

“We’ve been having a hard time here, but once again because the community stands together, we have overcome these challenges.

“Whenever something happens, everyone just comes together,” says Roben Collen, a member of the community.

Lubbe was full of praise for the way the community has supported him and his family.

“They were terrific, it’s been wonderful.

“Thank you to the community and to the people that have helped us,” says Lubbe.
