Runners gather for President’s Run before Comrades

“We just want to wish them well and hope they all come back with a medal,” says Comrades veteran Carol Wallace.

Striders Athletic Club gathered on Sunday morning in Geduld for their annual President’s Run.

The President’s Run is the last race for the runners before they go off to the Comrades Marathon.

It also gives the veterans of Comrades a chance to pass on some advice to those who will be running the epic marathon for the first time.

“We just want to wish them well and hope they all come back with a medal,” says Comrades veteran Carol Wallace.

The President’s Run has some interesting traditions that go with it.

One of these is that the person in the club with the most Comrades finishes under their belt leads the race and nobody is allowed to go past him or her.

Petra Myburgh, who has completed an impressive 21 Comrades, led the 10km race from start to finish.

Members of the club will be at the Comrades halfway point to cheer their runners on.

This year, the Comrades is slightly longer by just under a kilometre due to the new finish line being at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

There are an impressive 36 runners from the club taking part in this year’s Comrades, of which six will be participating for the first time.

In the next edition of The Addie, we will sit down with Clement Westley who will be participating in the legendary marathon for the first time.
