BREAKING: Learners stab each other at a Springs high school

More than six learners, aged between 16 and 18, from a local school sustained serious injuries after they were involved in a knife fight this morning (Friday).

On Friday afternoon, the Addie was contacted by a concerned parent of a learner at a local high school claiming that several learners had been in a fight at the school.

He alleged that paramedics had to be called to the scene to treat all the learners involved, and added that one was taken to hospital for further treatment.

According to a reliable source, who cannot be named, the incident may be related to gang violence.

Springs police spokesperson, Captain Johannes Ramphora, says the disagreement between the learners broke out on Wednesday, but the teachers managed to intervene and stop the fight.

“But today (Friday) it turned ugly when they started fighting and pulled out knives, stabbing each other.

“One learner was rushed to hospital in a critical condition,” he says.

Police were called to the scene at 11am.

The police invited the parents of the learners who were involved in the incident to open cases, at the Springs Police Station, on behalf of their children.

He cannot confirm how many cases were opened.

“We are also working with the Gaunteng Department of Basic Education (GDE), school teachers and learners to establish what started the fight,” Ramphora says.

The Addie contacted the school principal for comment and were referred to the GDE.

When contacted by the Addie, Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the GDE, said he could neither confirm nor deny the incident took place without a written request for comment.

The Addie had sent this request and awaits the department’s response.

Ramphora says they are investigating cases of grievous bodily harm.

This is an evolving story and will be undated when more information becomes available.
