Sharon Park electricity outages explained

The Ekurhuleni Metro has given an explanation for the power outages that have plagued Sharon Park over the last few years.

Residents of Sharon Park allege that at the first sign of inclement weather, there is a power outage.

In February the MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy, Tiisetso Nketle, said that the newly upgraded substation in Dunnottar would resolve the frequent and continuous power outages that have plagued Sharon Park for the past seven years.

Nkelte also blamed the frequent power outages on cable theft and vandalism.

However, Themba Gadebe, the spokesperson for the metro has now stated that Sharon Park is fed from Sharon Park Substation (Eskom Substation) and that the newly upgraded Dunnottar substation will not address the issues that have plagued Sharon Park over the years.

“Sharon Park doesn’t interconnect with networks in Dunnottar and have different voltages (11kV and 6.6kV),” says Gadebe.

Gadebe adds, “Sharon Park is fed from Sharon Park Substation and Eskom may be able to provide information on whether they do have projects to resolve the problems relating to the supply network and how they will deal with the recurring faults.”
