Addie staff in the kitchen: Shredded beef short-rib

This recipe is a great alternative to hamburger patties and makes an informal get together with friends a little more interesting.

This recipe is perfect to serve either in a steamed bum or put the filling into dim sum.

Find the Steamed buns and dim sum recipe if you want something a little more adventurous than the traditional bread roll.

STEP 1: Collect all your ingredients (Ingredients in this recipe were sponsored by Pick n Pay Strubenvale).

Ingredients:

  • 850g beef short ribs.
  • 1 onion, peeled and diced.
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and minced.
  • 2 large handfuls of fresh thyme sprigs.
  • 250ml red wine.
  • 125ml water.
  • 60ml hoisin sauce.
  • A few drops of hickory liquid smoke (which I found at Pick n Pay in the sauce aisle)
STEP 2: Place the short ribs and onions into a slow cooker (Crock pot).
STEP 3: Mix the garlic, red wine, water, hoisin and liquid smoke. Toss this mixture over the meat. Add the sprigs of thyme. Cook on low for 6 hours. You can also put all these ingredients into a roasting pan and roast at 160 degrees Celsius for 2 ½ to 4 hours.
STEP 4: Whichever cooking method you prefer, the meat must be cooked until it comes away from the bones easily. Remove the cooked meat and shred. Serve on a steamed bun or in dim sum.
