Easter safety level-crossing campaign at Enstra Level Crossing

Motorists still not stopping before going over Enstra Level Crossing.

Transnet Freight Rail started its Easter safety level-crossing campaign at Enstra Level Crossing.

The company began early on a chilly Wednesday morning.

The event was part of a campaign by the company to warn motorists and pedestrians about the dangers of not taking precautions when approaching or crossing railway lines.

The campaign is aimed at reducing injuries and deaths arising out of train incidents by focusing on changing the behaviour and attitudes of the public.

The Enstra Level Crossing has proved a danger to the public in the past.

Children who are not aware of the dangers of level crossings play on the tracks and don’t realise that it takes 1.2km for a train to stop.

Motorists at the busy intersection were given pamphlets warning them about the dangers of not observing the proper safety procedures at the level crossing.

Pedestrians and community members were generally happy with the way motorists governed themselves at the level crossing.

“The cars do stop for us. The only problem is the crime around this area,” says Thandeka Mahlangu.

Absalom Nkosi says, “We don’t have problems here. There is enough light.

“The only problem is these nyaope boys.”

The Easter campaign is the first of many that will take place during the year.

Sister Themba, operations manager at Transnet, said, “The message of the day is to remind motorists to stop when approaching the level crossing and to respect pedestrians.

“It’s about your safety, my safety and our safety.”
