Lindelani Informal Settlement protests are over
The latest on the Lindelani Informal Settlement protests.
The protests at Lindelani Informal Settlement have ended.
The community started protesting early last week Monday, demanding water and electricity.
The community alleged that promises had been made over the past few years but nothing had come of them.
Due to the protest action, the R51 was closed at irregular intervals as the road was littered with stones and burning tyres.

The MMC for infrastructure services, Robert Mashego, addressed the community of Lindelani Informal Settlement on Wednesday afternoon.
During the address, Mashego admitted that community members had met with the mayor on October 8 last year and had handed over a memorandum containing a list of their needs.
Mashego also admitted that they could not locate the memorandum at the mayor’s office.
However, Mashego added: “We as Ekurhuleni have taken a decision that all settlements, formal and informal, will have electricity and water.”

In a separate address on Thursday, the MMC for human settlements, Lesiba Mpya, informed the community there would be another meeting on March 20.
Mpya said he would bring a team of people to do a survey to find out how many residents there are in the community. They would then see who qualifies for municipal services, as the land does not belong to the municipality but to a private owner.
The community appeared to be satisfied with that.
The protests ended on Thursday afternoon.
Speaking to the Addie on Monday afternoon, Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police, says, “Kingsway is open.
“We have not had any problems since the protests ended on Thursday.”
