Springs-based JKS Kishou Karate Academy kicks into high gear

Local karate clubs open to everyone.

The JKS Kishou Karate Academy isn’t big but its members carry quite the punch.

The team is based at the Springs Country Club and has beginner, intermediate and adult classes.

It has the distinction of being one of the few clubs affiliated with the World Karate Federation in Springs.

The mixed group of students sweat it out and they battle to improve their skills.

The club was started in 2011 with just two students and has now grown to 50.

There is no distinction between students, and boys and girls spar together during the class.

The highly qualified instructor at the club is Sensei Charmain Esterhuizen.

Esterhuizen not only has Protea colours but has also represented South Africa in the world championships.

“Karate is great for self-defence and discipline.

“It’s not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle.”

“The lessons you learn here, can also be applied to real life,” says Esterhuizen.

Esterhuizen has lofty ambitions for her students and wants them to reach their full potential, be that achieving higher belts or representing South Africa.

One of her students, Eckhard Prinsloo, will represent South Africa in the national championships next weekend.

Prinsloo (13), is excited about the opportunity to represent his country.

“ Getting to national is great.

“I was shocked that I got a place.

“I’m feeling a bit nervous but I hope to go further,” says Prinsloo.

The academy is still open to getting new members as long as space permits.

Fitness is not a requirement because fitness levels will improve with time in the class.

Beginner classes are on Mondays and Wednesday from 6pm.

Adult classes from 7pm also on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Intermediate classes are from 6pm onwards on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Classes cost R240 per month.

To join the academy or for more information, call Carla Verster, the manager on 071 361 1821.
