UPDATE: Kingsway Avenue (R51) still closed as protest continues

The R51 is still closed as the protests on the major route continue for the third day.

Lt Col Mack Mngomezulu, the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Central Cluster says, “the people started to gather this morning.

“The police and the EMPD are still on the scene to monitor the situation.

“There is a representative from the mayor’s office that will address people at 2pm this afternoon.”

The protests started early on Monday morning and the road was littered with stones and burning tyres.

The people of the Lindelani informal settlement are protesting for service delivery.

Among other things, they are demanding electricity.

They allege that promises have been made to them over the years but nothing happens.

The protesters have vowed to continue with the protest until their demands are met.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, spokesperson for the Springs police says motorists should avoid the area and be careful at all times.
