Springs journalist injured while covering protest

While she sustained a minor injury, the back window of her vehicle was struck by a stone.

Springs Advertiser journalist Siphokazi Zama was attacked when she arrived on scene to cover the story of protest action on Kingsway Avenue, just after Dersley, this morning.

When she approached the scene at approximately 7.45am, she saw a group of about 40 to 50 protesters.

““Tyres were being burned and there was a lot of smoke in the air and you could see the fires burning,” she says.

Three men broke away from the large group and started throwing stones at her vehicle.

As they came closer to the vehicle, they aimed at Zama through the open driver’s side window and she was struck on her right arm.

“I told them I’m from the media and then they ran to the back of my car where they continued to throw stones at me,” says Zama

Journo first goes back to work

Zama (27) left the scene in a rush, but instead of seeking treatment, she first returned to the office to inform her colleagues of what had transpired.

“I am just very annoyed that after all this drama, we still don’t know what the protest was about,” she says.

Zama was the first to react when a member of the community informed her of what was happening on the R29/R51.

Zama’s arm was bleeding from the injury she sustained.

She received first aid before getting medical attention at a local clinic.

The experience left Zama in shock, but she was full of praise for the friendly staff at the clinic who helped her.

Nurses Carolien Joubert and Leandra Duvenhage brought back the smile to Siphokazi Zama’s face following a traumatizing experience

**Meanwhile, Springs Advertiser is expecting an official statement from the local police on this matter.

The reason for the protest action is yet to be determined.
