Smurfland Nursery School spends the day at Life Springs Parkland Hospital for hands hygiene campaign

Smurfland Nursery School children become 'doctors' for the day at Life Springs Parkland Hospital.

Learners from Smurfland Nursery School were thrilled when they visited the Life Springs Parkland Hospital as part of the school’s ‘hands’ hospital theme for the year.

The learners were taken around casualty, the operating theatre and the maternity unit, and were shown how to properly wash their hands.

The school has a different hospital theme each year, and this year’s focuses on hands.

This coincided nicely with the hands hygiene campaign by Life Springs Parkland Hospital.

“The school approached us and we are always involved in community work so we agreed,” says Tertia Nieuwoudt, the hospital manager.

“It’s good for the little ones to develop good healthy habits at an early age.”

Washing hands is still one of the best methods to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.

The group of 65 children were excited to learn more and eagerly participated in all the activities set out for the day.

“I wasn’t scared to do anything”, says Ruhandrey O’Niell.

“I feel very good.”

Annabelle Steenkamp was very proud that she had learnt to wash her hands correctly and couldn’t wait to go home and teach her mum and dad.

The aim of the hospital visit was also to introduce the facility to the children in a friendly way, so that they are comfortable in a hospital environment should they ever need to go there.

“It’s nice for them to come here and get all the information when they are not scared,” says Smurfland Nursery School principal Rinda Beukes.

“They were also very excited to get on the big bus.”

The children left the hospital thrilled by what they had learnt and dreaming about becoming future doctors and nurses.
