Midmar milestone for Springs friends

Three Springs friends swam in the Midmar Mile which took place on Saturday and Sunday in Howick.

Eugene de Wet (36), Herman Rens (36) and Francois Schenk (39) participated in the aQuellé Midmar Mile, representing two charities between them as they each completed eight miles over the course of the two-day event.

Eugene, a former Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens learner, represented the Pink Drive charity, while Herman and Francois, former learners of Hoërskool Hugenote and Springs Hoër Tegniese Skool respectively, represented the Ezemvelo Wildlife charity.

This was the friends’ second Midmar Mile.

The trio met at last year’s event and, after discovering they are all from Springs, decided to start training together for this year’s Midmar.

“We train almost every afternoon and every Saturday morning at the Nigel Dam,” says Eugene.

They received their gold caps and 8 Mile medals as part of the 8 Mile Club, in the process raising over R10 000 for their respective charities.

“We are thinking of starting a social group to start training for next year’s Midmar Mile and to see if we can get more people involved in swimming, but this is still under discussion,” says Eugene.

The group thanks all their sponsors for making the day possible and enjoyable.
