Take a walk through Springs’ art deco history
Take in the marvels of Springs and get your daily exercise in the process.
Put on comfy walking shoes, grab a hat, sunblock and your camera and join the art deco committee on a walk back in time to admire Springs’ plethora of art deco buildings.
The committee, comprising locals Antonio da Cruz (Prosafe Security), Mary Reynolds (chairperson of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and Anita Greef (general manager of the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry) as well as architect Jeff Cole, seeks to promote and ultimately save as many art deco buildings in the Springs old quarter as possible.
In order to achieve this quest they have set about educating a broad audience from across the East Rand and further afield on the historical features of these buildings in an effort to get as many of the art deco buildings as possible recognised as national heritage sites.
Jeff will bring the history of a by-gone era to life as he leads the walking tour, discussing Springs’ architectural wealth, through the city with the second highest number of small-scale art deco buildings in the world, second only to Miami, USA.
The tour, which will span approximately 5km will start and end at the parking lot opposite Reynolds Travel in Sixth Street on March 18.
Starting at 9am, the party will proceed north up Third Street and south down Second Street and will take approximately two hours.
Prosafe Security will provide security at the car park and for the walking group.
