Tshepo Makupu spreads her wings and aims to fly high

“We empower ourselves by empowering others,” says Tshepo.

“Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.”

This quote may be attributed to media proprietor, talk show host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, but it also describes the positive mindset of Tshepo Makupu, a 2018 brand ambassador for Miss Eagle South Africa who is striving to make a difference in the community.

Tshepo, who resides in Springs, entered Miss Eagle South Africa in September after seeing an advert on social media.

According to the 25-year-old, she decided to get involved because she wanted to help and to have a positive impact on the lives of others.

“It’s not just a beauty pageant,” she says.

“It brings out the best in contestants as it focuses on women empowerment, skills development, charity work and giving back to the community.”

The contest is divided into four levels – Contestant, Brand Ambassador, Semi-finals and Finals.

Participants have to complete several tasks and activities in order to progress to the next level.

The finals will take place in December 2018, where the overall empress will be crowned.

Even though she has only been involved since September, Tshepo has described her experience so far as a rewarding one, adding that she has grown as a person and gained more confidence.

As part of giving back to the community, Tshepo has been actively involved with Food For Life and the Thandabantu Community Care Centre, where she assists in handing out food hampers on a Wednesday.

Discussing her ambitions and goals for the next year, Tshepo indicates she wants to continue giving back to the community and raise awareness for different charities.

When Tshepo is not performing her duties as brand ambassador for Miss Eagle South Africa, she runs a mobile spa and attends women empowerment seminars, where she has met some great mentors and learned new skills.

With such a strong focus on inspiring other women, it is no surprise that Tshepo’s biggest role model is Oprah Winfrey, whom she views as the ultimate embodiment of women empowerment.

“Young girls need to empower themselves,” says Tshepo.
