Selection Park restaurant owner recovering at home

Two family members seriously injured during an armed attack at their home.

Luiz Jose Dos Passos (50), owner of a Selection Park restaurant, was attacked and assaulted at his house in Rhokana Street in Selcourt on Saturday morning.

The traumatic event took place at 2.40am when Luiz arrived home from work.

He was allegedly approached by two armed men when he entered the premises.

According to Dos Passos’ father, Johnny Dos Passos, the armed men demanded cash, keys to the house and a gun.

“My son told them he doesn’t have any of the three items with him and tried to explain the keys in his possession were his business keys, but the suspects started assaulting him with their firearms,” he says.

After taking the business keys, they approached the house and tried to unlock the security door.

It was at this time Luiz’ brother-in-law, Orlando Pombo (54) heard the commotion and went to investigate.

When Pombo opened the wooden door, he noticed the two men struggling to open the security door.

“They shot my son-in-law in the stomach and he had to be airlifted to a hospital in Alberton,” says Dos Passos.

Two culprits ran away.

Dos Passos says there were three as the two suspects ran to a get-away vehicle where the third suspect was waiting for them.

He says Luiz sustained several cuts to his head and finger as he tried to protect his head with his hand.

“He received stitches to his head and finger and was discharged from hospital on Monday,” says his father.

Dos Passos says his son is still traumatised and is recovering at home.

However, his son-in-law is still in hospital in Alberton and had to be operated on for the second time on Monday.

“He went into theatre when he arrived at the hospital on Saturday, but had to undergo another operation on Monday,” he says.

With Pombo not doing well and his son Luiz recovering at home, the family is taking it one day at a time.

According to police spokesperson, Capt Johannes Ramphora, the two men were seriously injured during the attack.

“We are investigating a case of attempted murder and house robbery,” says Ramphora.
