Young boxers ready for SA Schools Championships

Ekurhuleni boxing team include two local boxers.

Two Bert Collins Boxing Club boxers will compete in the SA Schools Boys and Girls Age Boxing Championships 2017 from December 13 to 16.

They form part of a team of 12 boxers who will represent Ekurhuleni at the upcoming championships which will be held at the Duduza Community Hall.

Adriaan Colyn and Minnet Dicks have practised their punches and at one of the six workshops held at the club on Saturday.

Colyn was seen in the boxing ring several times, sparring against one of the team coaches Boetie Lourens.

He will box in the u-50kg category while Minnet will fight in the u-54kg category.

Shorne Moorcroft, who is the team manager, says the 12 boxers and three coaches Leonard Lesiba, Jeanette Dyzel and Lourens, are planning a few more workshops to make sure the team is well prepared.

The team was composed of different districts in Gauteng and has had three workshops thus far.

The last workshop will be held on December 2.

“It gives us a good six weeks of preparation before the championships,” says Moorcroft.

He says boxers from nine provinces will be competing at the championships which will make the competition a tough one.

“However, we will prepare them well on the technical side of boxing,” he says.

According to Moorcroft none of the boxers is allowed to compete in any other boxing tournament while preparing for the championships.

All the boxers in the team have good district and Gauteng boxing experience.

He believes the boxers are confident and have good team spirit to face the championships.

“They don’t know each other but have to work together as a team.

“We don’t only teach them boxing skills but also good discipline,” says Moorcroft.

Team coach and Bert Collins manager Dyzel believes the boxers should all be fit as fitness is entirely up to the boxer and their respective club coaches.

“They will all be well prepared for the championships,” she says.
