More runners in Garby Relay fund-raising race

Almost 500 runners enjoyed the cold weather and the relay race hosted at the Springs Rugby Club.

Despite the cold weather, athletes still turned up in their numbers for the Springs Striders Athletic Club’s annual Garbie Relay Race on Sunday.

The first runners left the Springs Rugby Club for the first leg at 7am.

There were 56 running and 45 walking teams from the East Rand who showed up bright and early for the 4.7km event

Each team consisted of five runners and/or three walkers.

In the running relay, a team from Benoni Harriers Club finished first with a total time of 1:20:47.

This club secured the first two positions for both their u-19 teams.

The second team finished with a total time of 1:27:58.

Britepack secured third place with a time of 1:30:29.

Glen Whitford finished the last leg for the Benoni Athletes for Christ team in a winning total time of 1:47:45.

The second place saw the Britepak Team 10 achieve a total time of 1:50:48.

The Garby race is the club’s only fund-raising event.

Athletes completed one lap around the field and then left the stadium at Rugby Road from where they proceeded to Plantation Road.

They passed the produce market and cemetery and then headed back to the stadium on Rugby Road.

The oldest competitors were over 70 years old.

Eric Whitford (77), Berniece Whitford (78) and their friend Maureen Carhart (70) were part of the senior walking team from Benoni Athletes for Christ.

Carhart says the event was to christen her badge.

Their team finished in a total time of 2:05:58.
