Dumping rubbish is illegal

Litter is unsightly and causes a stench.

Rubbish is being dumped on the corner of Teabush and Sapele roads, Bakerton.

According to Bakerton resident Charmaine Pathal, it is not just people dumping rubbish at this site. She has witnessed trucks offloading their refuse there as well.

Pathal has noticed a great deal of litter being dumped there.

She says the dumped rubbish is not only ugly, but is also unhealthy.

She has also noticed beggars sifting through the rubbish, which makes matters worse, as litter is strewn all over the place.

“The rubbish piles up and becomes a home to rats and other pests, which harms the environment by making it dirty,” she says.

Pathal went on to say it is unsightly and causes a stench, as nappies are also being dumped there.

Another concern is that the rubbish can get washed or blown into stormwater drains.

“The water from the storm drains then goes directly into the Blesbokspruit, where it can pollute the water and

become a danger to water creatures and plants,” she says.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, illegal dumping contravenes the City of Ekurhuleni’s bylaws.

“Springs’ waste management services takes note of the complaint and we will investigate.

“The spot will be put on the illegal dumping removal programme,” says Gadebe.

He asked residents to stop littering and teach others not to litter.
