It is alleged that for the past few months, Vorster Street and several other streets in East Geduld have been illuminated by street lights for 24 hours a day.
Resident Steward Mothatha says he does not understand why the street lights in his neighbourhood must remain on during the day.
“We have reported this issue several times and the municipality only sends different contractors to investigate,” says Mothatha.
Mothatha says he has called the municipality numerous times and was advised that they were aware of the issue. Since then, however, more streets have become a part of the issue.
“It’s irresponsible for the municipality to leave these lights on day and night especially during a time when electricity is a crucial issue in our country,” says Mothatha.
Another resident, Deon Greyling, says the day night switch on the street light outside his house has been damaged which could pose as a possible reason for the lights remaining on during the day.
“The municipality has to replace the day night switch in order for the street lights issue to be sorted. This could be the problem in every other section that is experiencing the same issue as our area,” says Greyling.
The metro failed to comment at the time of publishing.
