Daggafontein sewage overflows from manhole

Daggafontein resident hopes that the overflowing sewage in Daggafontein will be resolved by the metro.

Percy Mthembu, a resident in Daggafontein, says sewage leaks have been giving them endless problems since he and his family moved to the area in 2016.

Mthembu says sewage flows from a manhole on Pikkewyn Street onto an open field. The accompanying stench is awful for the houses close by.

“When we relocated here in 2016, the drainage seemed to be a problem,” says Mthembu.

Upon probing into the sewage matter with his neighbour, Mthembu was told the sewage leak had been reported previously and nothing seemed to have been done about it.

“People from the municipality came and checked the drains in our yards early in the year. They tried to fix what needed to be repaired on the vacant land only for the problem to start again a week later,” says Mthembu.

“My drain is not giving me issues but what troubles me is the manhole that is constantly open. It is near my house on the vacant land.”

Mthembu says metro workers, who claimed they were from Boksburg, were more interested in fixing a drain believed to be for a house that was to be built on the vacant land.

“In September, they began fitting a new pipe just across my house but they said nothing about the overflowing manhole that we’ve been trying to get them to fix.”

However, Mthembu says he has currently seen contractors busy on the vacant land near his house and has been advised that a new waste pump station might be put up.

“We are hoping the waste pump station will perhaps try to resolve the sewage matter we have been facing.”

At the time of publishing, the metro failed to comment.
