Residents battle sewage problems

Metro housing complex residents face sewage challenges.

A manhole situated in front of Olympia Palms in Geduld was overflowing with sewage for more than four weeks.

The manhole which is situated in First Avenue, Geduld emits a terrible stench.

Geduld resident Hannes Viljoen (43) says the problem has been reported to the metro many times.

There are four sewage manholes on the property at Olympia Palms.

According to Viljoen the top manhole began overflowing with sewage more than a month ago.

One week later the metro fixed the problem, but within a week, the second manhole started to overflow.

This continued until all four manholes were blocked with sewage and started overflowing.

“The smell was so terrible that we couldn’t enjoy our food at night,” he says.

Viljoen compared the situation to “eating supper in the toilet”.

After the fourth overflowing manhole was fixed, it apparently took less than a week for the manhole at the entrance to the complex to overflow.

This, according to Viljoen, continued for four weeks.

On Thursday he noticed metro workers working at the manhole.

However, he feels the metro should seriously consider addressing the sewage problems they regularly experience at the metro housing complex.

“They stopped the overflow, but left the sewage deposits in the street.

“Maybe they hope the rain will wash them away,” says Viljoen.

Despite sending questions to the metro more than a week ago, they failed to comment at the time of publishing.
