BREAKING: One dead in 22 vehicle pile-up on N17 in Springs
One person has died and three other motorists sustained injuries in the accident on Friday afternoon.
A 22-vehicle pile-up brought traffic to a stop on the N17 highway at Tonk Meter Road this afternoon (Friday).
William Ntladi spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) says they received the call to attend to the accident at 2.40pm.
“Both west and east bound lanes experienced accidents at the same time, probably because of fields burning along the highway,” he says.
Ntladi says when the DEMS rescue teams arrived on scene, the fields were still burning, with wind blowing smoke across the highway.
“Selection Park and KwaThema rescue crews promptly responded to render medical assistance.
One person, a woman, was killed in the accident.
“The deceased was trapped in her vehicle and the Jaws of Life had to be used to recover her body from the wreckage,” says Ntladi.
He adds the three injured motorists were treated on scene and transported to the Netcare N17 Hospital for further medical care.
At the time of writing access to the highway at both Tonk Meter and Wit Road had been closed and the highway between the two on/off-ramps remained closed to traffic.
