One human trafficking suspect gets bail

Bail was granted to one of the four suspects arrested on human trafficking charges.

Three of the four suspects arrested in connection with an alleged human trafficking den in Eighth Street, appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The three suspects (Accused One, Two and Four) will appear in court again on July 7.

A 42-year-old man (Accused One) was arrested on May 19 in a house in Eighth Street.

The premises were raided after police followed up on information received from the community.

During the raid, police arrested the man and, following further investigation, a 26-year-old woman was also arrested, on May 19.

Bail was denied for Accused One but the court granted bail of R2 000 for Accused Two.

The woman will be back in court with her co-accused on July 7.

She faces charges of running a brothel and earning money from prostitution.

The court decided the woman is not a flight risk and has a 10-year-old daughter who she needs to take care of.

She has no outstanding offences or pending cases against her.

Court was adjourned for the public, but continued in camera for Accused Three.

At this stage, the court decided the bail application hearing of Accused Three, a 17-year-old girl, will be heard separately.

The minor remains at a place of safety.

Bail was denied for Accused Four, an adult man (42) who was arrested on June 8, as well.

“Accused One was out on bail when he was arrested, on a charge of rape,” says Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora.

Accused One, Three and Four are facing nine criminal charges each, including human trafficking and running a brothel.

The two men will remain in custody at Modderbee Prison until their next court appearance.

Contrary to incorrect facts given to the paper by the Springs Police in previous reports regarding a woman who was arrested on human trafficking charges, the Springs Magistrates Court revealed the correct information.

The woman was arrested on May 19 at an alleged human trafficking sex den in Eighth Street.

At the time Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora told the Addie that she was 19 and had a prior charge pending against her.

The court revealed, on Friday, that the woman is 26 years old and there are no outstanding offences or pending cases against her.
