Tender wheels turn slowly for Markville residents

Markville residents are hopeful the bid specifications for the replacement of their broken elevator will be completed soon.

The metro has commented on the elevator problems in the Markville housing complex in Eleventh Street.

According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe the bid specifications for the tender to replace the elevator were supposed to be submitted to the Bid Specification Committee (BSC) by May 15.

The tender is for the replacement and installation of new elevators at eight properties within the metro, including Markville.

However, due to the specialised nature of the case, the bid is currently being prepared internally as opposed to being done by a consultant.

The metro spokesman claims this took longer than anticipated.

“The bid was submitted to the metro finance department last Tuesday (June 6) for evaluation and approval before it was submitted in the BSC agenda,” says Gadebe.

He says lifts are specialised and require the correct specifications.

“We anticipate one month for the bid to be approved and advertised,” says Gadebe.

“Once advertised it will take two months for evaluation and adjudication.”

The metro apologises for the inconvenience caused to the tenants and residents.

“Tenants will constantly be informed about the procurement stages and replacement of the elevators,” says Gadebe.

Markville resident Joey Vorster (65) says they are grateful for the effort behind the bid specifications.

“We would really like our new elevator to be installed as soon as it has been approved, as the inconvenience goes beyond words,” says Vorster.
