Home owner angry over house robbery

Robbery victim is too scared to go home.

While Cynthia Shabangu (42) recently enjoyed a weekend out of town, robbers entered her house in Hani Street, Payneville, and took all her electronic equipment.

She says she was horrified at what happened.

“Burglaries were just statistics I heard of and I never dreamed it could happen to me,” says Shabangu.

Her son Lindo Shabangu (18) had returned home at 1.30am and found the back security and wooden door to their house open.

Shabangu says the robbers forced open the security door and broke the wooden door in two pieces.

“I am shocked my safe haven has been invaded,” she says.

She is too scared to return home and is currently staying with her sister in Spruitview near Germiston.

Shabangu says she is experiencing a variety of emotions, including a feeling of being violated; as well as helplessness, anger, sadness and fear.

“I will just have to let these emotions run their course before I return home,” she says.

Her son Lindo is staying at the house.

“I have my suspicions on who the robbers were and took the police to their house in Everest informal settlement,” he says.

He claims all the stolen goods were discovered at this house.

“The police didn’t arrest anyone,” he says.

SAPS spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora confirmed the break-in and the recovery of the stolen goods.

He says when residents hear the word “robbery” they only think of monetary loss.

“The truth is, those who have been robbed find the emotional damage can be much more devastating than losing material possessions,” he says.

Ramphora says they are still investigating the case.
