Our Lady of Fátima arrives in Springs

Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, in Springs, was the recipient of the peregrine (travelling) statue of Our Lady of Fátima, which arrived from Portugal on Saturday.

Maria Goretti Helena says the arrival of the Mother of Peace was a welcome and fitting one, as it marks 100 years since the appearance of Our Lady of Fátima to three children in the middle of World War Two, on May 13, 1917.

“It is so fitting because we desperately need peace in this country,” says Maria.

A bishop from Portugal, His Excellency Bishop Vitalino Canas, accompanied the Our Lady of Fátima statue into the church on its arrival.

Council 20 of St. Thomas Aquinas, a group of Catholic gentlemen, awaited the statue’s arrival, along with numerous other visitors, on the steps of the church.

The council is part of the Knights of da Gama, a South African brotherhood of Catholic gentlemen, which is divided into councils, whose aim is to encourage its members to contribute to the spread of the Kingdom of Christ on earth by becoming stronger Christians.

A convoy of more than 50 Os Frakitos bikers led the statue on its journey from the Our Lady of Fátima Portuguese Church in Benoni to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Springs.

Four of the bikers carried the statue into the church.
