Springs sex den update: Man (42) and woman (19) accused of human trafficking

Five girls, aged between 14 and 19, were rescued from an alleged human trafficking den in Eighth Street, in the CBD of Springs, on Friday.

Springs police spokesperson Capt Johannes Ramphora says one of the girls is a KwaThema resident.

The premises was raided after police followed up on information received from the community.

During the raid, a 42-year-old man was arrested and, following further investigation, a 19-year-old woman was arrested, on Sunday.

They both appeared briefly in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where the case was postponed to Monday, May 29.

According to Ramphora, the man, who is Nigerian, faces charges of human trafficking, possession of drugs and possession of pornographic material and the woman will be charged with kidnapping.

“The woman is believed to be the mastermind behind the human trafficking who, allegedly, elicited children locally and from Balfour, in Mpumalanga.

“Both suspects have pending criminal charges against them and are possibly linked to other child pornography cases.

“The man was out on bail when he was arrested, on a charge of rape, while the woman stands accused of a prior case of kidnapping.”

Maj Gen Girly Mbele, Ekurhuleni East Cluster commander, says the quick reaction of the sector police to the tip-off led to the arrest of the suspect.

“Four of the girls are from Balfour, in Mpumalanga, and one is from KwaThema,” says Mbele.

The teenagers were taken to Life Springs Parkland Hospital for medical treatment and then to a place of safety.

The man has been remanded at Modderbee Prison while the woman remains at a place of safety, until their next court appearance.

The suspects will stand trial together.
