N17 Hospital spoils nurses

The Netcare N17 Hospital celebrated International Nurses Day on Friday.

Day and night staff were treated to a scrumptious breakfast and nursing students read the nurses pledge to all present.

“Nursing is a profession that requires dedication and a passion for people.

“We celebrate this day to recognise the immense contribution that nurses make to society.

“They work long hours and during holidays and the festive season; these people leave their own families behind to come here and care for those in need, as well as supporting the families of our patients,” says Andries Joubert, the general manager.

The International Council of Nurses commemorates International Nurses Day annually around the world on May 12, which is also the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Joubert says as the largest health care profession in the world, there is no doubt that nurses are key to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

“Nurses are often the only health professionals accessible to many people in their lifetime.

“So nurses are particularly well placed and often the most innovative in reaching under-served and disadvantaged populations,” he says.

Joubert believes nurses are educated to understand the complex nature of maintaining health and wellness, and the impact of psychosocial and socio-economic factors such as poverty, unemployment and ethnicity.

“They see the context for well-being and accordingly act in way to reach beyond the immediate presenting problem,” says Joubert.

There was also a lucky draw and there were some very excited winners.
