SAPS warning: Vehicle theft scam

Springs police are urging victims of vehicle theft not to react to any phone calls unless it is from the police.

According to SAPS spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora, they have had numerous reported incidents when victims received phone calls from people claiming they have found the stolen vehicle.

He says these perpetrators ask the victims to pay a certain amount, which differs with every situation, in order for them to return the vehicle to its rightful owner.

“People should not fall victim to this scam,” he says.

The duty of the police is to put a stop to crime and to find the stolen vehicle.

“Once the vehicle is found, after further investigation, the vehicle will be returned to its lawful owner without any remuneration,” he says.

He urges the community, once they receive a call from these culprits, to immediately phone the investigating officer dealing with their case.

“We will then react swiftly by trying to trace the call which will enable us to investigate the matter,” says Ramphora.
