SAPS warning: Vehicle thieves have new modus operandi

Criminals can rob you within minutes after you drive out of your parking space.

According to Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora, thieves have a new modus operandi of loosening wheel nuts of tyres while the vehicle is parked.

“Check all four tyres to see if the wheel nuts are still in place before driving off,” he says.

Several incidents have been reported at the police station concerning this new trend.

Ramphora says motorists get into their vehicle and drive off, without noticing their wheel nuts are loose.

“Soon after leaving their parking, they realise something is wrong and once they stop their vehicle, the perpetrators attack,” he says.

The criminals allegedly either rob the people or tow their vehicle away.

Anyone who is aware of such an offence should report it to the police.
