Nursery school children learn about hand hygiene

Life Parkland Hospital entertained the children from a Petersfield nursery school on World Hand Hygiene Day on Friday.

The day is marked globally and highlights the importance of hand hygiene in health care.

The slogan of this year’s campaign is ‘Fight antibiotic resistance … it’s in your hands’.

When principal Rinda Beukes contacted the hospital for a visit from her learners, hospital manager Tertia Nieuwoudt decided to set the date for Friday.

“We thought that Hand Hygiene Day is an excellent opportunity to educate the children on washing their hands, the technique and the importance thereof,” says Tertia.

She explains that the washing of hands is still the most important and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and infectious diseases and, subsequently, admission to hospital.

“Hosting these children was also a wonderful opportunity for us to make young children familiar with the hospital environment, which can be very daunting for little ones,” she says.

Rinda was surprised at the planning and effort the hospital staff put into entertaining the children.

Each child received a gift bag that included a picture to colour in, gloves, hand wash, theater shoes and cap, sweets, muffins and cold drink.
