According to infection, prevention and control manager, Sr Stephina Seroka, the day is aimed at promoting hand hygiene especially in the health institution.

She says hands are one of the primary germ carriers as they touch different products and move items around.

“Our hands are the carriers of germs and so we need to ensure that they are clean at all times,” says Seroka.

There were demonstrations on proper hand washing in different wards in the hospital.

One of the patients who visited the institution on the day, Andile Hlophe, says he has learnt a lot from the campaign.

“I did not understand the importance of keeping our hands clean, until the staff members shared the information with us,” says Hlophe.

Speaking on behalf of the hospital, communications manager Hendrik Buda, says the hospital supports the World Hygiene Day and encourages staff members and patients to ensure that they keep their hands clean at all times.

“This will ensure that we avoid the spread of infection,” adds Buda.
