San welcomes fresh veggie donation

Jesus Outreach Feeding Scheme is a sign of hope for many residents in Springs where fresh vegetables are a luxury.

Jesus Outreach Feeding Scheme is a sign of hope for many residents in Springs where fresh vegetables are a luxury.

The Eastvale-based scheme is run by San van Wyk who, through regular donations, is able to distribute food to more than 50 families.

A large fresh vegetable donation from San’s friend Bettie Koekemoer, who lives in Brakpan, arrived at a time when the cupboards at the feeding scheme were empty.

“Bettie told me she had received fresh vegetables, which she would like to donate to the feeding scheme,” says San.

When San went to fetch the vegetables on Wednesday, she was surprised to find cauliflower, pumpkin, green beans, carrots and butternuts, neatly cut up into pieces.

The fact that the veggies were already cut up made the job of San and her helper, Sarie Jones easier.

“We make up smaller packets which we divide between the needy families in need,” she says.

Jesus Outreach relies on donations and they also sell second-hand clothing to gain an income, which they plough back into the feeding scheme.

“I bought chicken on Tuesday with the money we received from the sale of clothing,” says San.

She provides food, clothes and sometimes blankets, to these needy families once a month according to the size of the families.

“We appreciate every donation we receive. We have 50 families we supply groceries to, we have added more families who are in dire need of food to support their families,” says San.
