Local boxer claims Best Boxer award

Amateur boxers put on a good show at a Development Boxing Tournament hosted by Bert Collins Boxing Club on Saturday.

The event was held in Geduld, with more than 20 clubs taking part.

The spectators were loud as they cheered for their favourite boxers.

Local junior boxer Geanne Dicks’ (15) fought against Felicia Khumalo from Mpumalanga.

Geanne kept her opponent on her toes and finished the third two-minute round in a junior category bout.

She won with a 3-0 point score on judges’ decision.

Her coach and father Freddie Dicks says he is extremely proud of her and that she threw clean, straight punches.

“We will have to work on her distance,” he says.

The 16th contest was between local boxer Dimitri Annandale (12) and Fryer Connor from the Elsburg Boxing Club.

Club manager Jeanette Dyzel said Dimitri followed up with good punches but could not put it to proper use, which led to his defeat.

He lost the fight 0-3 on judges’ decision.

Dyzel says Clayton Meyer (12) had an excellent 3-0 win on judges’ decision.

The fight between Luan du Preez (12) and Pauw Delron from Son Rise Boxing Club was stopped in the first round.

Dyzel says it is called a ‘ref stop’ contest because Luan is inclined to pause between punches.

“He just paused a fraction too long and the referee stopped the fight,” she says.

Adriaan Colyn (14) was awarded the Best Boxer of the Tournament by referee Piet van Vuuren.

Dyzel says his defence was excellent and he proved to be ready to compete at the Gauteng Boxing Championships.

Later in the afternoon, Khumbulani Makoe continued the winning streak for the local boxers with a unanimous points decision win against Jonathan Grose of Booysens Boxing Club.

“Makoe’s dominating performance with a 3-0 points decision victory over his opponent shows why he is classed as a champion in the junior-weight class,” says Dyzel.

With four wins added to their winning record, Dyzel says coach Freddie is very happy with the performance of their boxers.
