SAPS arrest 11 illegal miners

The Springs police seized illegal mining equipment and arrested 11 men during an operation targeting illegal mining, on Thursday.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the successful operation was conducted in Grootvlei.

“None of the 11 men arrested could show any legal identification,” he says.

SAPS Air Wing helicopter circle the area in Grootvlei Mine to look for possible illegal mining activities during a police operation held in the area on Thursday.

With the assistance of an SAPS Air Wing police helicopter, officers searched the area and seized illegal mining equipment.

This included three generators, about 15 spades, one wheelbarrow and nine picks.

Ramphora says the illegal miners use the equipment to mine underground.

The 11 men will be taken to Lindelani Detention Centre in Krugersdorp soon.

However, they will appear in court first for illegal mining and illegal immigration.

“We are proud of the good work by the SAPS members,” says Ramphora.
