The purpose of the visit was to spend time with the elderly and to give them cake.
Birnie, a Springs resident, says one of her reasons for visiting the old age home was to remember her grandmother.
“My grandmother died when I was still quite young and I never knew my grandfather,” she says.
She believes old age homes create a safe haven and environment where senior citizens are understood, and receive special attention.

“Senior citizens will always hold a special place in my heart since I lost my grandmother when I was small and I never had a grandfather,” she says.
Bianca says the staff at the old age home are doing a wonderful job.
With the help of Sibongile Mahlangu, who assists her during her visits, she handed out cake to more than 100 seniors.

She believes senior citizens don’t really expect much apart from a hug and someone to hold their hand for a while.
“They have wonderful stories to share if there is someone who is willing to listen to them,” she says.
